Hello Everyone, It's one of the Most Wonderful Times of the Year. I say that because I am doing a daily count down until my beautiful, full of life grand children come to visit for the Holiday.
As the holidays approach, many of us look forward to traditional meals with family and friends. But this year, why not shake things up a bit? Instead of just the usual turkey or ham, let's bring some excitement to the table with perfectly grilled steak. Whether it's Christmas morning, steak and eggs or a cozy Christmas Eve dinner with steak and fries, your family will be thrilled with this delicious twist on tradition.
I received a call from my son last night letting me know his is making ribs and he will be cooking turkey in the smoker. I am so thrilled for the family engagement around food and togetherness. Ebony will make her famous potato salad and Areyl will make her famous Brussel Sprouts.
My daughter in law who is just like a daughter to me, has encouraged our wellness by inviting us all to participate in the Harrisonburg Turkey Trout. Ebony will be singing the national Anthem and 4 family members will be running. This is a monumental shift and we are embracing it to the fullness.
New Tradition Alert
Thanksgiving night, as the house settled into a post-feast calm, my grandchildren walked into our bedroom with a sparkle in their eyes. "Grammi, we have something special for you," they said. My mind raced, imagining they had drawn a picture or crafted a thoughtful gift. What they handed me instead was a gift card to my favorite coffee shop.
"Can we get up early and go have coffee with you and Ebony and Areyl before heading to the store?" they asked. My heart swelled with joy as I agreed. They knew how much I loved my morning coffee and wanted to share that moment with me.
The next morning, we made our way to Moxie Coffee Shop. The twins eagerly asked us questions, we laughed, shared stories, and cherished the time together. It was so wonderful that we decided to make it a two-day tradition. The following morning, we visited Black Sheep, this time bringing Pop Pop along. It was another heartwarming experience filled with love and connection.
As my grandchildren grow older, I discover new ways to feel their love. They shared how difficult it is to say goodbye and how much they miss us, turning a simple coffee outing into a cherished memory. This Thanksgiving was truly special, and I hope you and your families were equally blessed.
Choosing the Perfect Steak
The first step to a mouthwatering grilled steak is choosing the right cut. Whether you prefer a tender filet mignon, a juicy ribeye, or a flavorful sirloin, each cut has its unique charm. Visit your local butcher at the Framers Market selling high-quality steaks that will have your family running to the table.
Seasoning to Perfection
Great steak doesn't need much to shine. Keep it simple with a generous sprinkle of salt and freshly ground black pepper. For those who like to experiment, try a mix of garlic powder, smoked paprika, and a touch of cayenne for an extra kick. Let the steak sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
Grilling Techniques
Preheat your grill to high heat, ensuring it's properly oiled to prevent sticking. For a perfect medium-rare, grill your steaks for about 4-5 minutes per side, depending on thickness. Use a meat thermometer to ensure accuracy—you're aiming for an internal temperature of 135°F (57°C).
Resting and Slicing
Once your steaks are grilled to perfection, let them rest for about 5-10 minutes before slicing. This allows the juices to redistribute, resulting in a tender and juicy bite. Slice against the grain to enhance tenderness.
Steak Placement
For a festive twist, pair your steak with crispy rosemary fries or creamy garlic mashed potatoes. Add a vibrant salad or roasted vegetables to balance the meal. On Christmas morning, serve steak and eggs with a side of buttery toast and fresh fruit for a hearty start to the day.
